When you’re going through a divorce in California, it may be tempting to vent about the situation on social media. However, revealing details of your relationship and divorce is not wise, and it can be detrimental to the legal process and finalizing the divorce in a timely manner. Remember that everything shared online is out there forever. Try to have those tough conversations with close family and friends, rather than sharing your divorce issues through social media.
Posting on your social media accounts during a divorce can create problems with your future ex-spouse. If you post negative things about them, it can make them retaliate against you. Not only can this make an already stressful situation even worse, but it can wreak havoc on your mental well-being when you’re likely already trying to adjust to a new dynamic.
If there are children involved, they may see or hear about what you post online about their other parent, which can hurt their feelings and make them feel confused about the situation. Instead of posting on social media, take the time to care for yourself and your kids. Try to provide them with stability and comfort while they adjust to a new way of life.
If you don’t wish to completely stop using social media until the divorce is final, it’s important to be careful about what you post. Avoid going on social media when you’re upset, and don’t post anything negative about the other party. Don’t share details of the divorce proceedings or negotiations online as your soon-to-be ex-spouse could use some of the information against you in court.
Encourage your friends and family to stay positive about the situation and not bash your future ex publicly on your social media accounts. Make your accounts private, and only give access to trusted friends and family members. It may be tempting to search through your ex’s accounts to find information about their current life, but snooping on your ex can create more tension in the relationship and make the divorce more difficult.
Going through a divorce comes with many challenges, with a lot of those challenges requiring you to negotiate and make the best decisions for your own well-being. Don’t be afraid to ask for help during your divorce, especially when it comes to making legal decisions. California divorce laws can be complicated to understand, but by seeking help, you can feel like you’re making sound legal decisions and working toward creating a new life for yourself post-divorce.
